A professional teeth cleaning is performed by our dental hygienists. It is the part of oral hygiene that involves the removal of dental plaque and calculus (tartar) from your teeth. Routine professional teeth cleanings are the best way to prevent gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontal (gum) disease.

Dental plaque is a biofilm or mass of bacteria that grows on surfaces within your mouth. It is sticky and colorless. It may become acidic causing demineralization of teeth (cavity) or harden into calculus. It is also the primary cause of gingivitis. Dental plaque can be somewhat eliminated with regular brushing and flossing of teeth; however, calculus can only be removed with a professional teeth cleaning.

Gingivitis, if left untreated, can develop into periodontal disease. This involves the progressive loss of bone around teeth and can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth.

Our dental hygienists will not only provide you with a professional teeth cleaning to remove plaque and calculus but they will also assess the health of your teeth and gums, provide fluoride treatment, assist you with proper brushing and flossing techniques, and offer nutrition counselling. Our dental hygienists will also have suggestions for halitosis (bad breath), tooth sensitivity, and dry mouth.

To eliminate any discomfort, especially if it has been a long time since your last professional teeth cleaning, Dr. Hynes can administer local anesthetic.
